<image:title>Blog - Chesterton Academy Grad Grateful For Classical Education</image:title>
<image:caption>Grace O’Connor (second from right) plans to work with the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará, a Catholic religious community. Her work will be hands-on as she serves the poor, the sick and the elderly. PHOTO PROVIDED Posted Tuesday, July 7, 2020 2:12 pm By John Singleton If the secret of life is learning to say “thank you” better, the education of Grace O’Connor has been a lesson in gratitude. “I’ve been to many different kinds of schools,” O’Connor explained. “Private, public, all-girls, Catholic, homeschooling - the best school is the one that pursues the true, good and beautiful.” As a 2020 graduate of the Chesterton Academy in Annapolis, O’Connor developed an appreciation for the school’s classical curriculum. “Through the Great Books, we tackle problems that are in the world today, that other schools are afraid to talk about,” said the 18-year-old Severna Park resident who lived in Virginia, California and Hawaii before moving to Maryland. “The Socratic method allows for civil conversation and personal growth. Everyone is treated like an adult. No subject is off limits.” Much of her education has taken place outside the classroom. In the summer of 2019, she lived in Calcutta, India. “It’s called the City of Joy - one of the poorest cities in the world. A place of material poverty and spiritual prosperity,” O’Connor said. Working with the Missionaries of Charity founded by Saint Teresa of Calcutta, O’Connor became even more appreciative of what she has. “I’ve been in rich places. And in the poorest of poor places,” she said. “I’ve tried to find happiness in sports, self-image, the party scene, success. But an obsession with superficial things is making my generation isolated and fearful.” In the summer of 2018, O’Connor walked the Camino de Santiago, also known as the Way of St. James, leaving behind all electronic devices. “Social media creates a world that doesn’t exist,” she said. “I had to break out of that. Leave behind the Instagram feed.” At the end of her 100-mile pilgrimage, she visited the tomb of St. James in Galicia, Spain, ending her journey with an epiphany. “I found my authentic self in Christ,” said O’Connor, who is a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. “Not in chasing self-improvement or self-promotion, or a virtual definition of success.” In 2020, O’Connor’s vocation of gratitude continues. For the foreseeable future, she plans to work with the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará, a Catholic religious community. Her work will be hands-on as she serves the poor, the sick and the elderly. Despite the excitement surrounding next steps, O’Connor’s thoughts continually return to her classical, Catholic education at Chesterton Academy. “Abiding joy comes from seeking the true, the good and the beautiful,” she said. “Serving others. Serving God. “I was headed down a bad, self-centered road — cynical, meaningless, destructive. I am so grateful to Chesterton Academy for creating an environment of growth, thought and joy!”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Faculty and Staff Bios - Violet Saradin</image:title>
<image:caption>Violet Saradin always loved reading classic literature of all kinds, even math and science, and followed that joy by attending the Great Books program at St. John’s College. There her passion for learning and studying grew. However, she left for a period of time due to the changes imposed during the pandemic. While away from school, she spent a few years working with children in various educational settings. She also briefly moved to an unfamiliar town, where she happened to join a local community choir because she did not know anyone and liked to sing. This choir happened to be the Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers, whose impassioned Gospel singing inspired in her a passion for Christianity which she had never known before. Nearly a year later, after having left the choir and gone back to school in Santa Fe, New Mexico, while walking home and listening to gospel music, she realized she fully believed all that was being sung and began attending Catholic Church the next day. The seeds of Catholicism were sown by reading Aristotle and Plato years before, and by her trip, the previous year, to see her extended family in Slovakia, where she was deeply moved by the service at her family’s 500 year old village church. She was baptised and confirmed at Easter services one year after that special realization. Miss Saradin holds a bachelor’s degree in Western Philosophy and History of Math and Science and looks forward to teaching the juniors and seniors in Calculus class this year, as well as meeting new families through her work in admissions.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dennis Nilsen is a husband and father of four boys who lives with his family in Washington, DC. A native of Long Island, New York, Dr. Nilsen had taught American history and politics at the university level at both public and Catholic schools for ten years before coming to classical Catholic education. Upon finishing university, Dr. Nilsen attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary for the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, discerning a vocation to the priesthood for four years. It was there that he acquired a deep respect for the traditional approach to education as well as learning in philosophy, theology, Latin and Gregorian chant. His wife Patricia is a tenured professor of architecture at the Catholic University of America whose passion is the living out of Catholic social teaching through her profession. One of her projects is an ongoing plan to build housing for refugees in Erbil, Iraq, who fled from the Islamic State. She is working with Bishop Warda, the very same prelate who supported the opening of a Chesterton Academy in the same city.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Greg Yatarola is a native of upstate New York, where he grew up riding bicycles and working on farms and playing sports. After high school, he spent two years at a service academy, and then transferred to a Catholic school in the Midwest. After spending some time teaching and then in the white-collar world, he came to Maryland to get a master's degree in liberal arts from St. John's College, and has remained in Maryland ever since. Greg's undergraduate degree was in mathematics, but he has strong interests across the curriculum. He is in one sense a cradle Catholic, and yet in a more meaningful sense describes himself as far more of a convert. When not at work teaching or tutoring, Greg has his own business in tree work and firewood. He also delights in his motorcycle.</image:caption>

<image:caption>"My Old Man," by Hemingway, reminds Mr. Ramirez of his own itinerant upbringing as an urban gypsy. By age 12, he had been homeless and a state ward. A truck driver introduced him to Aristotle and soon he read a translation of Homer’s Odyssey. Unbeknownst to him at the time, Mr. Ramirez became a Classicist through a perennial human quest. At age 17, Mr. Ramirez joined the military. Shortly thereafter, he obtained discharge after considering John Paul II’s opposition to preemptive acts of war in Baghdad. He then lived with a community of contemplative monks for a year. His Classical formation continued when he befriended a group of rural, homeschooling families and learned the old-world custom of parents as primary educators. He went on to double major in undergraduate philosophy and theology at Franciscan in Steubenville. After working in parochial education, Mr. Ramirez became convinced that the uncritical acceptance of ‘careerism’ in schools furthers the cultural degradation of marriage and family life and the paganization of Western civilization. He is completing a graduate program in philosophy (Franciscan) and a graduate program in theology (Pontifical John Paul II Institute). He and his wife recently celebrated the first birthday of their daughter.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lori Thoits was born and raised in southeastern Louisiana. Growing up, summer vacations were often spent immersed in history, traveling with her family to visit old houses, churches, and cemeteries. After high school, she attended the University of Dallas and Louisiana State University to study history and architecture; she graduated summa cum laude with a Master's degree in American history and surprised herself by converting to Catholicism to boot. Thinking that she would enjoy sharing her love of history with others, Mrs. Thoits then taught junior high and high school history, literature, and philosophy classes and developed history curricula for several years at a growing charter school network in Arizona. In addition, she has homeschooled (and continues to homeschool) each of her children through eighth grade. When she is not teaching, she enjoys reading, baking, and exploring the world of fiber arts. Mrs. Thoits looks forward to delving into the past with Chesterton students this year!</image:caption>

Theresa went on to study literature at Franciscan University of Steubenville, where she received her bachelor of arts degree. Her favorite authors include Leo Tolstoy and Willa Cather. Outside of work, Theresa enjoys cooking, playing the piano, and shockingly, reading. Raised in a Catholic family in Virginia, faith has always been a priority in Theresa’s life.
